The reason why YouTube is one of the social media platform of my choice for this essay research is because YouTube has been part of me for a long time. I treat YouTube videos as tv programmes. It has been 6 years since I started watching YouTube videos almost every single day. Therefore, it is everything to me. Being interested in YouTube and curious about the other side of it will definitely give me a boost in learning more about this social media platform through this essay.
Without further a do, I'll start my informative blog post about YouTube :-
According to YouTube website, Youtube is a platform where billions of people discover, watch and share originally-created videos. It was launched in May 2005 but was bought by Google in 2006.
YouTube's slogan, ' Broadcast Yourself ' implies that literally anyone is able to create and publish videos at their own risk. (TechTerms, n.d.) " This shift the idea of the website as a personal storage facility for video content to a platform for public self-expression matches Youtube to the ideas about a user-led revolution that characterizes rhetoric around 'Web 2.0' (Grossman, 2006)." (Burgess & Green, 2013: 4) YouTube as a media platform, does not create videos. It only serves as a service provider for video creators to use this platform to upload videos online and offers revenue streams from advertising sold on the website. It is an example of what David Weinberger (2007) calls 'meta businesses' - the 'new category of business that enhances the value of information developed elsewhere and thus benefits the original creators of that information' (224). (Burgess & Green, 2013: 4) For example, Pinterest is also considered as meta business as it is a platform where people share website and photography of interest with one another. In conclusion, almost all social network are considered as meta business.
As the years goes by, there is more uncertainty to the meaning and uses of YouTube as it plays multiple roles as a high-volume website, a broadcast platform, a media archive, and a social network and this phenomena can be explicate as the source of YouTube's cultural 'generativity' (Zittrain, 2008)
Will YouTube die from the internet ?
YouTube being the second most social media users in 2016 shows that it is still popular among all the other social media. There is no doubt that it is the only video platform that appears to be popular among other category of social media when there are other video platform like Vimeo, Dailymotion and Flickr.
YouTube is still the dominant video platform but will definitely slowly fade away if they do not constantly update new features to it as there is no doubt many upcoming video platform in the near future, new and improved.
On the other hand, YouTube fearing that other video platform catching up to them, has launched YouTube Red which is a monthly subscription service from YouTube that removes advertisements from all videos, everywhere you watch.(Mithroff & Martin , 2016) YouTube is definitely trying their best to compete with social media platform like Netflix and Spotify with YouTube Red by having features like streaming videos and music at the same time having original content like Netflix. (Ingram, 2015) It is still progressing as it is still new and needs lots of improvements.
Furthermore, Facebook is still leading the charts as it has a new feature which is the live video. It has definitely attract the attention of most Facebook users even though YouTube also has that feature. I can say Facebook's version is more successful as its users varies whereas YouTube users who uses the live video feature are mostly YouTube video creators to their viewers/fans.
