YouTube Podcast #1

Even though this research blog deadline was already due, I would like to continue to add some content into this blog as I am still researching on my topic and I want to have a place where I can channel my thoughts and points on the resources that I feel can be related to my topic.  After the first tutorial, I was told by my lecturer that marketers/business companies are not really a community as community is when people with the same interest come together. My lecturer then suggested me to just go in depth about YouTubers using Youtube as a social media platform. I was told to change one of the communities(marketers) in my essay into a specific genre of YouTubers with another genre of YouTubers. For example : Gamers vs Vloggers.  Therefore, I will research more about YouTubers and figure out which kind of content creator I would like to choose to write on for my essay. For now, I am comfortable with writing about Vloggers but the other content creator t...

2.8 Final Decision & Essay Structure

My final decision is to compare and contrast YouTube Community with Business Companies . This is because I feel both of this community are widely ranged and there are more to it then you think like what is happening behind the scenes. Which community has more to gain using YouTube? You would have to wait for my essay to be written to find out. With the help of the diagram above, I will briefly explain how I am going to structure/outline my essay. As for the   introduction , I will introduce the social media platform that I have chosen which is YouTube and why I chose it. Is YouTube that important? Will it survive if the communities involved do not commit and without different communities involved in this platform will this platform survive and grow up to today? Furthermore, I will mention about the communities involved on YouTube. I will be debating about their financials, video content and viewers . Which of the communities have more to gain?  For the firs...

2.7a Business Companies - Marketers

Social media is one of the biggest platform for advertising and YouTube as it is owned by Google, the main source of advertising online. As a Graphic Design and Advertising student, I feel it is important to broaden my knowledge about advertising connecting to social media as it is one of the main source of advertising in this digital age.  How do business companies take advantage of YouTube for marketing ? Business company would rather spend their money on advertising on YouTube as it is not only affordable and effective but also cheaper. Based on the image below, there are a few ways advertisement can be put in place on YouTube. YouTube ads have an average cost-per-view (CPV) of $0.10 - $0.30, and the views that you generate will count towards your overall YouTube viewer count. Furthermore, YouTube only charges you when the viewers watch the whole advertisement (if the video less than 30 seconds) or a least 30 seconds of the advertisement. This means companies/market...

2.6b YouTube Audience - Educators & Students

Have you use YouTube for education purposes? From my experience as a student, I use it to help me out when I have problem understanding certain topics when I'm in class and sometimes even learn something new from it. Other than that, teachers and lecturers also sometimes use it in the classroom; showing examples of good videos or animation, teaching us about a certain topic in an interesting way with animated version on YouTube. Educating yourself is a never ending process. As long as you want to learn something new or in depth, you are educating yourself. YouTube actually is one of the source for free educational videos that can be accessed by anyone. YouTube actually launched YouTube for Schools back in 2011 as they believe that they can improve the environment of the class and make teachers lives easier by doing so. With YouTube for Schools, it can prevent students from getting distracted by other videos that are not regarding about education during school hours. ...

2.6a YouTube Audience - Statistics

I bet everyone is guilty of using YouTube. No matter how old or how young you are, you've definitely at least been to YouTube once. As a viewer, how do you feel about YouTube? Does it benefit you or is it just a distraction or an escape from reality? YouTube has a very large audience and can be divided into a few categories such as gender, age, ethnic groups and many more. Men and women watch different genre of videos on YouTube. The most male dominated category on YouTube right now is football/soccer with 93% of the total viewership, secondly is strategy games (gaming) just 0.2% behind soccer/football. On the other hand, in the female category , makeup and cosmetics is most popular with 89% female audience. From this statistics, I can conclude that men uses YouTube more often than women. Furthermore, the difference is that majority of men uses this platform for leisure purposes whereas women uses it for self-help purposes. YouTube is definitely a source where we are ab...

2.5b YouTube Community - Income

Back to my question,  how YouTubers are paid   ? YouTube YouTubers only start getting paid after they hit 1,000 subscribers on their channel. The amount of viewers on their video, counts.  " 1, 000 views gets you about $1.50 of revenue." (Kachroo-Levine, 2015) " If a YouTuber links Google AdSense to their channel, they make 68% of the ad revenue. YouTube charges advertisers when a viewer watches 30 seconds or more of the ad. Only about 15% of viewers will be counted as a "paid view" since many of them skip. " (Alleger, 2015) 1,000 views –> 150 views of people completing the ad $.18 per view x 150 views = $27 charged to advertiser $27 advertiser charge x 68% revenue share = $18 paid to content creator per 1,000 views (Alleger, 2015) Patreon With YouTube's unstable payment, YouTubers are able to open up a Patreon account to get a steady income (monthly or per video) and not hesitate to produce videos on YouTube for a livi...

Figure 1 Before going into the hard stuff. From Figure 1, try recognising as many YouTubers as you can ☺  No doubt the YouTube community is extremely big. What makes them equal is that they create videos. Videos that range from educational, political, rants, product reviews, gaming, animations and many more.
