2.6a YouTube Audience - Statistics

I bet everyone is guilty of using YouTube. No matter how old or how young you are, you've definitely at least been to YouTube once. As a viewer, how do you feel about YouTube? Does it benefit you or is it just a distraction or an escape from reality?

YouTube has a very large audience and can be divided into a few categories such as gender, age, ethnic groups and many more.

Men and women watch different genre of videos on YouTube. The most male dominated category on YouTube right now is football/soccer with 93% of the total viewership, secondly is strategy games (gaming) just 0.2% behind soccer/football. On the other hand, in the female category, makeup and cosmetics is most popular with 89% female audience. From this statistics, I can conclude that men uses YouTube more often than women. Furthermore, the difference is that majority of men uses this platform for leisure purposes whereas women uses it for self-help purposes. YouTube is definitely a source where we are able to rely on with its richness of information in video form.
(Gaille, 2016)

From the statistics above, it is proven that the most popular audience on YouTube is 18-34 year olds. This is not out of the ordinary as in this century, this age group are more prone to use the social media. How does age affect the demographics of YouTube? YouTube being one of the media platform where all ages are welcome to use, there will always be something where it interest each individual. Teen viewers will definitely be more prone to watch original videos from YouTubers such as vlogs, random facts about things and YouTube challenges whereas older viewers will watch videos like tips and tricks on doing certain things and documentaries.
(Gaille, 2016)

YouTube audience will continue to grow year by year unless there's a new and better video platform online. In my opinion, the age group will evolve as the years goes by, with the percentage of younger audience increasing. The cause of this is generation Alpha. "Screens are placed in front of them from the youngest age as pacifiers, entertainers and educational aids" as "they began being born in 2010, the year where iPad was introduced, Instagram was created and "app" was the word of the year, so they have been raised as "screenagers" to a greater extent than the fixed screens of the past could facilitate". (William, 2015) YouTube having many popular source for younger audience is definitely a great alternative for parents instead of buying expensive DvDs and CDs (who still uses that now)

3.6 Conclusion & Essay Structure

QUESTION 5 Explore a variety of media is used within the context of branding or transmedia storytelling . Does variety dilute the effectiveness of an advertising campaign or story? From my research this past few weeks, I decided to concentrate solely on trans-media storytelling and plan to concentrate on one franchise that uses it which is  Pokémon as I believe it has greatly succeeded by using this technique. Therefore, I will be including Henry Jenkins' theory of transmedia storytelling 101 to backup my research essay on  Pokémon as trans-media storytelling.  To be honest, I'm not sure whether I'm on the right track on this essay topic because I'm only concentrating on one specific franchise in trans-media storytelling and whether the points on my essay structure is repeating itself? Not much critical thinking? _________________________________________________________________________________ ESSAY STRUCTURE So does the variety of trans-media storytelling di...

3.5e Pokémon Fan Fiction

Fan art- Incorporation of My Little Pony and Eeveelution from Pokémon As "a vehicle of and for the national imagination transmitted through a currency of superpowers and lovable characters", Pokemon fans are very invested in their characters. (Allison, 2006) Therefore, with their love and interest for the characters, they create their own version of the story also known as fan-fiction . According to Henry Jenkins, fan fiction can be seen as an unauthorised expansion of these media franchises into new directions which reflect the reader's desire to "fill in the gaps" they have discovered in the commercially produced material. Fan fiction are normally being produced by dedicated individual that wish to continue the role for their favourite character in the initial story. Pleasing their own desire, they create their own storyline; it could be a continuation, a new storyline or even a crossover between characters from other television series. Basically, there...
