2.6b YouTube Audience - Educators & Students

Have you use YouTube for education purposes? From my experience as a student, I use it to help me out when I have problem understanding certain topics when I'm in class and sometimes even learn something new from it. Other than that, teachers and lecturers also sometimes use it in the classroom;
showing examples of good videos or animation, teaching us about a certain topic in an interesting way with animated version on YouTube.

Educating yourself is a never ending process. As long as you want to learn something new or in depth, you are educating yourself. YouTube actually is one of the source for free educational videos that can be accessed by anyone. YouTube actually launched YouTube for Schools back in 2011 as they believe that they can improve the environment of the class and make teachers lives easier by doing so. With YouTube for Schools, it can prevent students from getting distracted by other videos that are not regarding about education during school hours. "YouTube for Schools, a network setting that school administrators can turn on to grant access only to the educational content from YouTube EDU." (YouTube Official Blog, 2011) There are an array of playlist of topics on different subject with different levels/grade and many other educational videos made by teachers which can be used when teaching a classroom. YouTube has once again prove that it is a versatile media platform with many other functions to it.

Traditional teaching is outdated as most people have short attention span on concentrating on certain things especially when it comes to knowledge. Therefore, according to Sanjay Sarma, director of digital learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S, "schools and universities need to adapt to the internet age by breaking teaching down into bitesize video lessons" like the on provided on YouTube. (Telegraph, 2015)

Based on a research held by W. Marc Jackman and Patricia Roberts on Students' Perspective on YouTube Video Usage as an E-Resource in the University Classroom, students held positive opinions about the use of YouTube media to supplement the psychology lectures based on the quantitive findings. There were also a number of subjective questions about how YouTube videos improve the lecture. There were also many positive response. The image below shows the respond of the students who participated in this research.

OPINION
It is definitely an advantage for educators to use YouTube videos as a teaching method as they don't really have to prepare slides and notes but is it unfair that they are using other people's (YouTube community) thoughts and knowledge to teach instead of theirs ? That way anyone can teach a class by using YouTube videos? There are possibilities where educators are able to bluff their way through acting as though they know what they are teaching but actually they don't. Getting paid for using YouTube videos to teach a class? Is this the future of educational jobs?

3.6 Conclusion & Essay Structure

QUESTION 5 Explore a variety of media is used within the context of branding or transmedia storytelling . Does variety dilute the effectiveness of an advertising campaign or story? From my research this past few weeks, I decided to concentrate solely on trans-media storytelling and plan to concentrate on one franchise that uses it which is  Pokémon as I believe it has greatly succeeded by using this technique. Therefore, I will be including Henry Jenkins' theory of transmedia storytelling 101 to backup my research essay on  Pokémon as trans-media storytelling.  To be honest, I'm not sure whether I'm on the right track on this essay topic because I'm only concentrating on one specific franchise in trans-media storytelling and whether the points on my essay structure is repeating itself? Not much critical thinking? _________________________________________________________________________________ ESSAY STRUCTURE So does the variety of trans-media storytelling di...

3.5e Pokémon Fan Fiction

Fan art- Incorporation of My Little Pony and Eeveelution from Pokémon As "a vehicle of and for the national imagination transmitted through a currency of superpowers and lovable characters", Pokemon fans are very invested in their characters. (Allison, 2006) Therefore, with their love and interest for the characters, they create their own version of the story also known as fan-fiction . According to Henry Jenkins, fan fiction can be seen as an unauthorised expansion of these media franchises into new directions which reflect the reader's desire to "fill in the gaps" they have discovered in the commercially produced material. Fan fiction are normally being produced by dedicated individual that wish to continue the role for their favourite character in the initial story. Pleasing their own desire, they create their own storyline; it could be a continuation, a new storyline or even a crossover between characters from other television series. Basically, there...
