3.3 Trans-media Storytelling

According to The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE),  storytelling define as 'relating a tale to one or more listeners through voice and gesture'.

Storytelling, something that you encounter every single day. Be it, listening to music, radio station or a normal conversation with your friends. "We're all natural storytellers and story audiences." (Glassner, 2004) It is a great communication tool to convey information compellingly as everyone experience life differently, the story being told by an individual is unique and connects us all. According to Harvard Business Review's research, a well-constructed narrative are able to engage with the audience and influence their attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of an individual. Therefore, the power of storytelling enables businesses to influence consumers to use or consume their product.

There is no limitations in producing a story for an audience. Stories can be told through any form of media such as books, games, podcast, movies, music, etc. It can also be combined to form a story which is also known as trans-media storytelling. According to Henry Jenkins, trans-media storytelling represents 'a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience.' This will lead to an interesting form of interaction between the story and the audiences from all around the world; with the motif of connecting information from various medias.

In that case, it is vital to have a good storyline on a fresh project. Therefore, if the industry wants to further enhance the story after a long time, they are able to use trans-media storytelling method which is quite popular today. It is also one of the way to earn money easily as the original storyline has it's own group of loyal fans.

How far can trans-media storytelling go? Will the consumer get tired of connecting the dots?
I will further discuss this in my later post as I will extensively dive into this topic

On my next blog post, I'll be explaining in depth about "13 Reasons Why", a novel that used trans-media storytelling.

3.6 Conclusion & Essay Structure

QUESTION 5 Explore a variety of media is used within the context of branding or transmedia storytelling . Does variety dilute the effectiveness of an advertising campaign or story? From my research this past few weeks, I decided to concentrate solely on trans-media storytelling and plan to concentrate on one franchise that uses it which is  Pokémon as I believe it has greatly succeeded by using this technique. Therefore, I will be including Henry Jenkins' theory of transmedia storytelling 101 to backup my research essay on  Pokémon as trans-media storytelling.  To be honest, I'm not sure whether I'm on the right track on this essay topic because I'm only concentrating on one specific franchise in trans-media storytelling and whether the points on my essay structure is repeating itself? Not much critical thinking? _________________________________________________________________________________ ESSAY STRUCTURE So does the variety of trans-media storytelling di...

3.5e Pokémon Fan Fiction

Fan art- Incorporation of My Little Pony and Eeveelution from Pokémon As "a vehicle of and for the national imagination transmitted through a currency of superpowers and lovable characters", Pokemon fans are very invested in their characters. (Allison, 2006) Therefore, with their love and interest for the characters, they create their own version of the story also known as fan-fiction . According to Henry Jenkins, fan fiction can be seen as an unauthorised expansion of these media franchises into new directions which reflect the reader's desire to "fill in the gaps" they have discovered in the commercially produced material. Fan fiction are normally being produced by dedicated individual that wish to continue the role for their favourite character in the initial story. Pleasing their own desire, they create their own storyline; it could be a continuation, a new storyline or even a crossover between characters from other television series. Basically, there...
